Some people see the binding process as just a final step in preparing their printed publications, but selecting the right binding type will not only determine how functional your publication is, but will also have a significant impact on the final appearance.

Perfect Binding

  • Professional appearance, low cost
  • Common finished sizes: 8 3/8" x 10 3/4", 5 3/8" x 8 5/16", 7" x 10", 6" x 9", 4" x 9"
  • Page counts: Minimum - 32 pages (16 sheets) Maximum - 1,420 pages (710 sheets)
  • Can include color divider sheets, index tabs, bleed tabs and bind-in/tear-out CD sleeves
  • Lower-cost alternative: Saddle Stitch for page counts of 60 or less

Case Binding

For books that need a more formal binding, such as textbooks, manuals and proceedings

  • Common finished sizes of 8 1/2" x 11", 6" x 9", 7" x 10"
  • Page counts: Minimum of 48 pages (24 sheets) and maximum of 1,600 pages (800 sheets)
  • Can include color divider sheets and bleed tabs, as well as a CD holder
  • Lower-cost binding alternative: Perfect Binding

Plastic Coil (Spiral)

  • Allows book to lay flat
  • Durable, plastic binding element doesn't get damaged in mail systems
  • Coil ends are crimped to keep pages in and to prevent snagging or unrolling
  • A superior binding quality over Wire coil binding
  • Standard colors are recycled plastic coils in black and white with 80% post-consumer waste
  • 45 other colors are available
  • Common finished sizes: 8 1/2" x 11", 6" x 9", 5 1/2" x 8 1/2", 4"x 9" (other sizes available)
  • Can include color divider sheets, index tabs and bleed tabs, plus a place to hold CDs
  • Page counts: Maximum of 1,000 pages (500 sheets) of 50# offset stock or 750 pages (375 sheets) of 60# offset stock
  • Lower cost binding alternative: Perfect Bind

Saddle Stitch

  • Inexpensive, lay-flat binding for smaller page counts
  • Common finished sizes: 8 1/2" x 11", 6" x 9", 5 1/2" x 8 1/2", 4"x 9" (other sizes available)
  • Page Counts: Maximum of 88 pages (44 sheets) if printed on 50# offset or 64 pages (32 sheets) if printed on 60# offset
  • Can include color divider sheets and bleed tabs
  • Lower-cost alternative: Corner Staple or Double Staple (left side)
